Livestream Production SOPs

Minor Production (ATEM Mini)

Using the ATEM Mini Pro (any of the variants), it is turnkey to livestream up to 4-input sources to YouTube, etc.

  1. Ensure that the venue has a network port that is mapped to allow access to the ATEM’s MAC Address. Test this early, and test this immediately before event, as COMTECH can occasionally make changes to active ports. You must see this resolve to an IP address (connect ATEM over USB to a computer to view in ATEM Software Control) that doesn’t begin in 169.xxx.xxx.xxx.
  2. All input sources must match the ports on the ATEM. Most ATEM Mini Pro units need HDMI inputs.
  3. While you can run the ATEM Mini without a monitor, it is strongly suggested to bring on to use with Multiview. The ATEM, by default, is setup to use cut/bus, whereby you hit the camera number button, and that’s what is live. It is recommended to switch this to Program/Preview (tap the camera button to switch that to Preview, and then tap Auto or Cut to switch the Preview source with the Program (live) source. You must connect the ATEM Mini over USB to a computer in order to change this default in Software Control.
  4. Double check the YouTube Private Key to ensure that it is correct for the event. Never share a key between ATEM or encoder devices.
  5. If presenter is displaying slides, it is strongly suggested to have an independent copy of the slides running on a laptop connected to one of the HDMI inputs on the ATEM, and simply mimic the presenter’s slide progression.
  6. Double check audio inputs to the ATEM or to cameras connected to the ATEM, and adjust levels accordingly. Generally speaking, you want speaking volume to be in the yellow area of the sound levels, but adjust on the fly.

Troubleshooting

No feed to YouTube.

If on campus, ensure that the device is getting a real IP Address. Any device will fall back to an IP Address beginning in 169 if it fails to get assigned a real address. At no point will a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address get you a connection to the internet. If proximate to the event start, and you’re seeing a 169 address, immediately call the COMTECH Network Operations Center at 919-513-9675 and provide the MAC address of the device, and the number labeled on the network port (typically xxxx-xx).

If that fails, or off campus with no other resorts to a hard-wired connection, an ATEM Mini can be connected to a computer view USB-C to either operate as a webcam, or feed into OBS and thereby fed to YouTube. This should always be tested ahead of time to ensure the configuration is accurate, but it will allow a WiFi connected computer to act as the encoder and distribution hub to YouTube. Similarly, a hotspot-enabled mobile phone can be connected to the USB port to utilize 5G wireless to transmit, but note that is always highly dependent on cellular coverage, and should be a last resort.
